What the Lip Injection Procedure Entails

Two to three days prior to your appointment, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or any other NSAIDs as well as red wine. 

Additionally, start Arnica Montana, which can be found at any health food store: take five pellets three times a day during the three days before your appointment. This will reduce bruising and swelling post-procedure.

During the procedure, a physician will first clean the injection area and apply a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort. They might also use nerve block injections for complete numbness.

Next, the doctor will use fine needles to inject a dermal filler directly under the skin. Hyaluronic acid, found in brand-name products such as Juvederm® and Restylane®, is often used. Produced by the body naturally, the gel-like substance hydrates and plumps tissue, giving patients fuller lips for 9 to 12 months. However, athletic people tend to metabolize the product quicker, so the results may not last that long.

What to Expect During Recovery

You should notice results immediately following lip injection treatment. It’s not uncommon for lips to look overly filled in at first due to swelling. Bruising and itching sensations at the injection site are also common side effects.

At home, place an ice pack on your lips to help the swelling go down and combat soreness. Continued use of Arnica Montana for three days post-procedure will also help with the swelling. 

A doctor might also recommend taking Tylenol for pain relief or prescribe a pain-relief ointment. The discomfort should subside within a few days, with side effects completely gone after seven to 14 days.
