Though moving can be a stressful experience, you can alleviate some of that pressure and check off some to-do list items by preparing your new home for your arrival. Follow these five steps to get your residence ready for a worry-free moving day.

5 Steps to Prepare Your New Home for Moving Day

1. Replace or Rekey the Locks

You don’t know who the previous homeowner may have given spare keys to, so replace or rekey all the locks before you move in. You’ll have an easier time adjusting to your new place when you’re confident your family and belongings are safe.

2. Inspect Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Faulty smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors won’t be able to protect you in the event of a fire or gas leak. Before moving day, test each device. If any still aren’t working properly after you change the batteries, replace them.

3. Check the Water Meter

To ensure your home is leak-free, take a look at the water meter, wait two hours while not using any water in the house, and check the meter again. If it doesn’t read the same as it did when you first checked it, call a plumber to inspect your plumbing system and repair any leaks.

It’s more convenient to complete this step before you move in, so your family doesn’t have to go two hours without water.

4. Paint moving

If you’re planning on painting any part of your home, do so before you move in. With no furniture in the way, you or the painting crew you hire will have a far easier time completing the project.

Even if you haven’t chosen colors for certain rooms yet, painting the whole house a neutral shade takes care of essential tasks like priming and base coats.

5. Tend to Your Garage

As with painting, it’s best to fix up your garage before it’s filled with your belongings. Add any planned workbenches, storage shelves, floor coatings, or other adjustments before moving day or at least before you start unpacking in your garage.
