By providing a space for the tools you use for gardening, landscaping, or construction, your shed already helps keep your home organized. However, it’s also a smart idea to organize the shed itself. That way, you’ll have an easier time finding and maintaining everything you place inside. Although it can be a challenging task, the following suggestions may help you stay organized.

5 Tips for Organizing a Shed

1. Keep Shelves Open

Whether you use free-standing wooden shelves or have them built into the walls of the shed, keeping them open makes it easy to group items together and find what you need because everything is immediately visible. You can also place everything in labeled boxes to pull off the shelves as necessary. For a more waterproof material, consider wire shelves. Either way, elevate the shelves a few inches off the ground to encourage proper ventilation.

2. Hang the Tools

There are several ways to hang your tools. Consider repurposing a pallet by placing nails and other supports into the wood, and then slip your tools over them. A pegboard, magnetic bar, or Slatwall system are reliable choices, too. You can also use some jars, fill them with small items like nails, screws, nuts, and bolts, and fasten the lids on the undersides of your shelves. You can then unscrew them when you need what they contain.

3. Set Chemicals Aside

Some chemicals are hazardous because they’re toxic or highly flammable. Keep them in their original containers and place them several feet away from anything else, especially if the containers hold fuel and there’s fertilizer nearby. To prevent sunlight from heating them up, make sure they’re in a cool, shadowy spot.

4. Create a Workbench

shedWhen you’re inside your shed, you need a place to work comfortably, which is why you should make space for a workbench. Repurposing old tables, furniture, lumber, and pallets are great ways to build one yourself. Ideally, get an adjustable workbench so that you can change the height and work standing up or sitting down as needed.

5. Use the Exterior

Not every item has to stay inside, especially if it’s a gardening shed. Build a wooden organizer or rack so that you can lean or hang large tools, like shovels, hoes, rakes, and pitchforks, against the exterior wall. Construct a cupboard to attach to the wall, too, for storing smaller supplies that you use frequently.
