Termites can make nests in homes long before they become visible to property owners. By the time their presence is known, the damage has already been done. Fortunately, there are some common signs of the insects that can help you identify an infestation before irreparable damage has occurred.

How to Know If You Have Termites on Your Property

1. Clicking Sounds in the Walls

Listen closely to your walls. Soldier termites make a soft clicking sound whenever their antennae sense danger through vibrations in their environment.

Worker termites also make noise as they munch down on wood. If you have these insects on your property, putting your ear to your walls can help you locate them.

2. Warped Windows or Doors

termitesThese critters produce moisture when they’re eating and tunneling through wooden structures, such as door and window frames. Over time, this humidity can cause the material to warp, and your house’s entryways might become difficult to open.

3. Mud Tunnels Along Your Building’s Exterior

These insects are good at hiding, and you’ll rarely see them in the daytime. They avoid detection by building mud tubes or tunnels for traveling. Look for these tunnels along your building’s exterior walls and in the concrete cracks of your driveway, patio, or walkways.

4. Tiny Wings Inside Your Home

Flying variations are also known as swarmers, and they will only leave their nest to mate and establish new colonies. When they mate, they often shed their silvery colored wings in piles. If you find tiny wings inside your home or along the exterior of your building, you might have an infestation on your property.
