Custom T-shirts allow businesses, organizations, and teams to brand themselves, but coming up with a design involves more than finding the right graphic or logo. The type of font you use on a custom shirt can also have a significant impact on the overall design. Consider these do’s and don’ts when choosing the typography for your design.

Do:

Make sure it’s easy to read.

When choosing a font, keep in mind that what’s on your screen may not match what comes out in print. Scripts, cursives, or fonts with thin lettering don’t scale down well when applied to smaller products such as hats or badges, making them a poor choice for your overall branding. They’re also difficult to read if you choose embroidery for your shirts.

Choose a font that matches the personality of your brand.

custom-t-shirts-hawaiiThere are a variety of fonts from which you can choose, including whimsical, elegant, and decorative choices. Think about the brand of your organization.

For example, a great choice for academic groups would be a serif like Time New Roman, while a business with a laid-back culture would do well to choose a display font such as Ewert.

Don’t:

Use numerous fonts in your design.

If your shirt has a motto, tagline, and other information you want to include along with your company or team name, you might be tempted to use multiple fonts to make your design stand out. But a standard rule in graphic design is to never combine more than three fonts in one design, and the fewer, the better. Instead, differentiate your motto or information by changing sizes, colors, or capitalization.

Forget to get a second opinion.

Before you commit to a font for your shirt design, show an example to others for their opinion. Most custom T-shirt printing companies also offer expert feedback at no additional charge. Getting others’ opinions can help you identify typos and gauge readability before you print.
