3 Signs Your Child Has a Vision Problem, Anchorage, Alaska

You want to stay on top of your child’s health to ensure proper development. However, vision problems can be one of the trickier issues to spot. Here are a few signs that your child may have a vision condition.

How to Determine if Your Child Has a Vision Problem

1. Physical Signs of Struggle

In some cases, eye doctors can spot vision problems just by the way their patients move. As a parent, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch these red flags. If your child is squinting to watch the TV or they always tilt their head when reading a book, they may be struggling to make out the images or text. Other examples include sitting abnormally close to a television screen or holding a device unusually far from the face.

2. Issues With Hand-Eye Coordination

visionIf your child has been having trouble playing catch with their siblings or filling a glass with juice, you might assume they need more practice to improve their motor skills. However, in some cases, this perceived clumsiness could point to vision inaccuracies. For example, if their depth of field is off, or if they have trouble seeing objects at a distance, they may not be able to aim for the basketball hoop.

3. Headaches & Nausea

If vision problems are at play, you might be able to notice them by symptoms. For example, eye strain can affect the nerves inside the head, leading to headaches and nausea. If your child rubs their eyes or forehead after reading or watching a show, or if they complain of feeling sick afterwards, you should take them to an eye doctor for an exam.
