It may be fun to watch wildlife scurrying around your garden, but those cute critters can be harmful to your plants. All of your hard work will be ruined if you allow these pests to run rampant through your garden, so take some wildlife control measures to keep your flowers and vegetables blooming all summer.

Common Garden Invaders

Raccoons

These animals are smart and will eat just about anything. For example, they might knock your trash can over one evening to dig through your leftovers, and then forage your garden the next day for fruits, vegetables, and berries. They can also become dangerous if you get too close while they’re trying to eat.

Squirrels

These quick critters can jump over a fence or slip through small holes, making them tough to get rid of. They’ll generally come into your garden for nuts, berries, fruits, and vegetables.

Groundhogs

How to Manage Your Wildlife Control

Fencing

Add a fence around your garden to keep out the larger animals, such as raccoons. Then, install some chicken wire mesh fencing around the base, extending about a foot underground, to deter the smaller rodents. If you need to prevent larger animals, such as deer, your fence should be at least eight feet tall, but check your local zoning laws and building regulations first to ensure you're allowed to build that high.

Sprinklers

Set up a motion-detecting sprinkler that'll send out a brief spray when it detects motion. This is effective at scaring away curious critters, though it could be inconvenient if you have kids or pets playing in the yard.

Scent Deterrents

Scent deterrents are less invasive for your family, but they'll need to be reapplied after every rainstorm. Bar soap hung from the trees or the fence will also keep deer out. You can even purchase the urine of predators to deter specific animals.
