Embroidery can add a beautiful, unique touch to linens, personal items, and work apparel. However, to preserve embroidered clothing, you'll need to exercise special care. If you're looking to clean your favorite items, follow these steps.

How to Maintain Your Embroidered Clothing

1. Vacuum

If your garment isn't looking as bright as it used to, try vacuuming it first. Put a piece of nylon stocking or light mesh over the end of the vacuum hose and move it slowly with the nozzle just above the cloth. Start on the front and then repeat the process on the back.

2. Soak, Don’t Scrub

embroidered clothingTypically, the way to remove a stain is to scrub it out. However, with embroidery, rough handling can be harmful. Instead, soak the garment in a mild stain remover specific to your stain. Avoid using products with bleaching agents, such as chlorine, peroxide, or sodium carbonate, as these can damage the fabric. If the garment is soiled but not stained, use warm water and a mild detergent to hand wash it.

3. Air Dry & Iron

After washing, gently squeeze excess water out. However, don't wring the item, as this can damage the fibers. Then, hang the garment or lay it flat to air dry. If you need to iron it, place a thick, soft towel on the board and another between the garment and the machine, and iron on the reverse side of the embroidery.

4. Store Wisely

Don't starch embroidered garments before storing them, as this can stiffen fabric fibers, make them more fragile, and attract insects. Also, instead of folding, lay the item flat or hang it up. Finally, consider wrapping the piece in tissue paper if you're storing it in a wood drawer, as wood can cause discoloration.
