In an emergency, a generator may be the only source of power for your home or business. To make sure it’s ready to run smoothly at a moment’s notice, have it installed and regularly inspected by a professional electrician. You should also keep an eye out for the following problems, so you know when you need repairs.

Generator Issues to Look For

1. Coolant

Your generator produces power using an engine that's similar to a car engine in many ways. Like your car, the engine needs to be cooled and lubricated to prevent overheating. You'll receive a low coolant level alarm if there's a leak, in which case your electrician will need to repair it and refill the coolant before the system runs again. You might also see an alarm about low coolant temperature. This is due to a faulty block heater, which would typically warm both the coolant and the engine block itself to the ideal temperature when you start your unit.

2. Fuel

generatorA low fuel level can be caused by a leak, meaning your generator won't have enough gas to run. On the other hand, if you overfill the tank, an alarm will go off, which you may need to reset manually to get the unit running. Finally, air can bleed back into the fuel system, interrupting the flow and preventing the engine from firing correctly. This happens most often when the unit isn't used regularly, so the best cure is to run the generator for a few minutes each week.

3. Battery

The generator's battery is what allows it to start, so it needs to be replaced about every three years. If it's not correctly maintained, residue can build up on the battery contacts and block the flow of electricity, preventing the unit from starting. There may also be a loose connection that interrupts the flow of electricity.
