While small in size, termites are known to cause significant structural damage, as they consume wood materials. In Hawaii, these insects are estimated to cause $100 million in property damage every year. Fortunately, if you can identify these pests early on, you can seek help from an exterminator to prevent the infestation from growing worse. Here are three types of termites that Hawaii homeowners should watch for.

3 Types of Termites That Live in Hawaii

1. Formosan Subterranean

Formosan subterranean termites develop in the soil, entering buildings from exposed structural joints and cracks in the foundation. They grow to be about a half-inch big and have creamy to orange coloration. Some may have wings equal in size and are covered in small hairs.

Drawn to moisture, these pests build complex networks of mud tubes throughout a home to get to and from various feeding spots. Due to their large population, they’re considered the most destructive termite in Hawaii.

2. West Indian Drywood

termitesThe second-most destructive species in Hawaii is the West Indian drywood. It’s known for its short white bodies and brown, cylindrical heads.

Rather than building colonies underground, like the Formosan subterranean, the West Indian drywood lives entirely within the wood structure of a building. Instead of constructing mud tubes, these insects punch holes out of the wood where they feed, from which they expel fecal pellets.

3. Pacific Dampwood

Although not as prevalent as the aforementioned species, Pacific dampwood termites are still problematic. This large species can reach up to an inch long and tends to have a yellowish-brown body. Soldier insects in this species are known for their large dark brown heads and protruding mandibles.

This insect has smaller swarms than other species but can cause a lot of property damage in the right environment. All these insects need to thrive is access to wood with a high-moisture contact.

They can be spotted swarming at dusk or evening on humid nights. It’s also common to see their detached wings throughout your home.
