When settlers first came to the United States, they made homes with the resources around them. Since trees were readily available, some of the first homes were log cabins. Although they are seen as unique and stylish these days, not many people know of their origins. Here is a brief guide explaining how log cabins came to be so popular.

Early Pioneers

Log CabinsIn the 1600s, Swedish settlers constructed log cabins using only trees. They used tools such as the ax, hammer, and auger to cut the logs to size and form notches at the ends. These notches allowed the logs to lock together like puzzle pieces at each corner of the home.

After the logs were stacked, the pioneers then slathered mud into the remaining cracks for insulation. Additional heating came from a central fireplace that doubled as a stove.

The Great Depression

In the 1930s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tasked the members of the Civilian Conservation Corps with building cabins in national parks in Virginia, Washington, Pennsylvania, and several other states. The production of these cabins provided much-needed jobs and housing to many families. Some of them are still standing today.

Modern Day Cabins

Modern-day log cabins are much easier to build, as most of the logs are milled and pre-cut. Many of the homes have multiple bedrooms and can be customized to meet your needs and design preferences. Similar to the past, log cabins are still found in rural areas. However, they are now commonly used as vacation homes where people can relax with their families.
