Businesses may use propane for heating oil and fueling machinery. Staff must understand how to store this gas to ensure it’s safe and ready for use. Here are four pieces of advice to ensure your propane is in top shape and poses no health risks.

How Businesses Should Store Propane

1. Keep It in the Original Container

If your employees accidentally fill a fuel tank with the wrong gas, they can ruin the machine. Always store propane in the original container with a label stating the name of the fuel and how much the canister can hold for refilling purposes.

2. Avoid Heat & Flames

Never store propane near heat sources that reach over 120 degrees Fahrenheit because propane is highly flammable. Keep these fuel canisters well away from sources of open flame, like pilot lights, as they can set the gas ablaze. These rules also apply to empty propane cylinders since the containers can combust from leftover propane residue.

3. Place It Outside

propanePropane leaks can quickly incapacitate people, causing weakness, headaches, dizziness, and convulsions. Avoid this issue by always keeping the fuel outdoors where there’s plenty of fresh air, even if the container leaks.

Place the tanks in a specialized storage shed with a ventilation system or a shaded outdoor area. Never stash the fuel in an enclosed area that doesn’t have ventilation, as it can pose a fire hazard if the temperature inside the container rises and causes a fire.

4. Avoid Overfilling

Before placing a propane tank in storage, fill it so that the container is ready to go when you need it. Top the tank up to the TW, or tare weight, printed on the collar of the container. Avoid overfilling the canister, as it can cause a leak that poses a fire hazard.
