What Makes an Aerobic System Different From a Standard One? 

Initially, the wastewater process is similar in an aerobic system. However, after the solids and greases have a chance to separate into the first septic tank—known as the trash tank—the wastewater is then pumped into a second tank known as the treatment tank. Here, an aerator pumps in oxygen. This allows bacteria that need oxygen to survive by consuming additional waste in the water.

After this process, the water is sent to a third tank, the pump tank. It is then treated with disinfectants before being pumped out through the drain field.
