If you plan to rent a storage unit, you likely want to get the most from your investment. Luckily, packing strategically can have a serious impact on how you use the space and protect your items. Below are a few tips you can use to get started.

How to Pack a Storage Unit

1. Dismantle What You Can

A large media stand or bookshelf can take up a lot of space in a storage unit. However, once you break it down, it suddenly becomes a small collection of flat panels you can tuck against the wall or between boxes. If you can, take furniture and larger stored items apart. You’ll waste far less space, and you can also wrap them in moving blankets or bubble wrap for protection.

2. Keep Heavy Items on the Bottom

Then, work your way up, stacking light and fragile items. Additionally, try to keep stacks of boxes close to one another, so they’re less likely to tip over.

3. Establish a Central Path

The best way to organize a storage unit is to establish a clear path down the middle. Mark a 2- to 3-foot-wide path with painters tape, and pack items on either side to ensure you can easily access everything. Place items of least importance in the back, such as seasonal decorations you'll only need once a year.

4. Label Everything

When it comes to labeling, don’t be afraid to go overboard by writing down all the contents of each box. This practice will make it much easier to find what you're looking for later on. You can also create a number system and inventory document to keep in the storage unit to help you find items.
