Every year, homes are damaged or destroyed by fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), as many as 1,000 of those fires are caused by pets. To prevent fires and fire damage, take precautions to keep your pets away from common fire sources.

How to Keep Your Pets From Starting a Fire

1. Use Flameless Candles

One of the leading causes of fire damage is the use of candles. Dogs and cats can easily knock over a candle and cause a fire. To prevent fire damage, never leave a burning candle unattended, or better yet, switch to a battery-operated flameless candle instead.

2. Use Metal Bowls

fire damageYou might be surprised to learn your dog’s water dish can start a fire. Using a glass bowl as a water dish outdoors or in a sunny window can start a fire. When the sun’s rays travel through the glass, the heat can cause the surface underneath to ignite, causing fire damage. Instead, use metal or ceramic water dishes, and keep them out of direct sunlight.

3. Secure Cords

House fires can start when a curious pet chews on an electrical cord, causing damage that leads to sparks. Chewing on electrical wires can also cause electrocution, so take care to secure cords behind furniture and out of reach of pets. If your pet shows an interest in chewing cords, apply a chew deterrent, and offer other, more appropriate items to chew.

4. Remove Stove Knobs

It might seem strange, but the NFPA says that the most common cause of pet-related fires is the stove. Curious pets can accidentally turn on burners, which can cause a fire if anything flammable is nearby. To prevent an accident, remove the stove knobs whenever you leave the house, and supervise your pets in the kitchen to keep them away from the stove.
