The warm weather of summer is fun and relaxing, but it can also get uncomfortably hot, which is where central air conditioning comes in handy. However, after months of disuse, it’s possible that your unit isn’t ready to keep you cool this summer. Cross a few items off an A/C to-do list before you turn it on and find out that it can’t provide what you need.

What to Do Before Operating Your A/C Unit

1. Inspect the Parts

central airCentral air conditioning has several components that need to work well independently for the system as a whole to function. Since the air filter is responsible for trapping irritants and pollutants in the air before they’re pushed into your home, it needs to be clear. If it looks full, replace it.

The coils in the indoor and outdoor units help transport refrigerant around the system. Clean off the grime with warm water, basic detergent, and a sponge so that the refrigerant can move freely.

While helping the refrigerant move between the indoor and outdoor units, the drain line sometimes gets clogged. Carefully remove large debris with a coat hanger, then pour vinegar inside to clear it out.

2. Remove Exterior Blockage

The drain lines and air filters aren’t the only parts that can get blocked. Move any objects that can prevent the air from coming inside your home through your vents, including furniture, curtains, appliances, and toys. Trim tree or shrub branches hanging near the outdoor unit to keep it clear, as well.

3. Call a Professional

If you go through this checklist and notice any damage to your unit or its parts, or if you’re unsure how to clean it, call an HVAC contractor for help. In fact, you may want them to do an inspection and maintenance even if everything appears to be fine, just in case there’s anything you’ve missed.
