If you have gum recession, there are several viable treatment options. While laser-assisted gum therapy is preferred over traditional grafting because of its noninvasive approach, it’s not as effective at treating severe cases of recession. Thankfully, there’s an alternative that lies somewhere in the middle. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) is a minimally invasive procedure that can reverse even extensive recession—without scalpels or sutures.

What Does the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique Entail?

During the PST, the dentist creates a pinhole in the affected gums and inserts a small device that essentially stretches the surrounding tissue downward, thereby reversing the recession. Once the gums have reached the desired position, the provider inserts collagen strips in lieu of sutures to keep them in place. As such, the procedure produces immediate results, and it requires virtually no downtime during recovery. Post-surgical discomfort is minimal and usually demands just one or two days of over-the-counter pain relievers, icing, and rest.

Who Is a Good Candidate for the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique?

laser-assisted gum therapyUnlike traditional soft-tissue grafting, which can only address one tooth at a time, PST can reverse gum recession over multiple teeth in one sitting. As such, it’s ideal for patients who have several problematic areas. The ideal candidate is otherwise healthy and still has adequate attached gingivae for the surgeon to work with. If you’re a good candidate for both PST and laser-assisted gum therapy, your dentist will be happy to explain the pros and cons of each so you can make an informed decision.
