How De-Escalation Works

While you have no control over the negative attitudes or tough-guy demeanors of others, you do have total control over the way you respond to provocation. In this case, de-escalation is an invaluable skill. By taking the right steps, you can diffuse a situation before a physical altercation occurs.

De-escalation doesn't mean you're backing down from a threat. In fact, your tactics will have the most significant impact if you remain assertive and in control. Assume a non-confrontational stance with your arms lowered at your sides, and speak in a calm, confident tone. Refrain from insults and look for a way to make the situation right, even if you did nothing wrong. For example, if a person is accusing you of slighting them, offer a sincere apology, even if it's just to address a misunderstanding.

Move away from the person at an angle while still keeping your eyes on them in case you need to react quickly. Unfortunately, some people can't be deterred from a fight, even when faced with a reasonable approach.

When to Use Grappling

Despite your best efforts, the aggressor may still launch a physical attack. If you don't feel like your life or well-being is in jeopardy—in which case you'd be justified in using stronger defense tactics—grappling may be the best course of action. This approach is often taught in self-defense training courses, as it doesn't involve striking a person, nor does it require the use of firearms.

Instead, grappling allows you to gain an advantage over a person and cause them to submit. Common moves include takedowns, escapes, submission throws, reversals, sweeps, and pinning. These approaches keep both you and the assailant safe and free from serious injury. They also allow you to keep the aggressor in custody until law enforcement arrives.
