It’s exciting to be a new homeowner, and this role comes with a host of new responsibilities. Among them is having an understanding of air conditioning parts and maintenance, so your house is always supplied with fresh, cool air. While you don’t need to be a trained contractor to have an AC, it helps to know at least a few basic terms.

5 Simple HVAC Terms to Remember

1. Coils

A pair of coils controls the temperature in your home. The coil in the outdoor unit removes heat from the refrigerant, ensuring it stays liquefied. The other coil is located in the indoor unit, and it evaporates the refrigerant while getting rid of heat in the air. These coils require annual washing with water and a simple detergent.

2. Compressor

Similar in function to a heartbeat, the compressor pumps refrigerant so that it circulates around various air conditioning parts. Its pumping adjusts depending on the temperature needed for your home. This component should be hosed down with water annually.

3. Ductwork

air conditioning partsAir is pushed through your home by a network of tubes known as ducts. The tubes are typically made of metal or a synthetic material. While many ACs require tubes, newer ductless systems don’t.

4. Filter

The air that circulates out- and inside your home will collect contaminants, like dust, dirt, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. AC filters are responsible for catching these particles, so they don’t find their way into your home. Cheap fiberglass filters should be changed monthly, while pleated models can be replaced every six months.

5. Refrigerant

Since refrigerant has a low boiling point, this chemical is used to absorb and evaporate heat. It works with the coils and compressor to ensure the indoor air matches the temperature you set on the thermostat. Different AC systems require specific types and volumes of refrigerant to work properly. This chemical should be replenished every one or two years.
