When your HVAC system runs reliably, it’s easy to take it for granted. Even with preventative maintenance, the unit will need occasional repairs to properly cool and heat your home. But, eventually, it will have to be replaced. Knowing when to repair and when to replace your system can save you money when the time comes.

When Should You Repair Your HVAC System?

If you notice an increase in your utility bills, your HVAC system is running inefficiently and needs to be repaired. The motors or condensers could be failing due to wear and tear. When condensers malfunction, they can draw too many amps to create cool air, which results in higher energy bills.

Wear and tear or improper installation can affect your ductwork. Tears can form, allowing air to escape. The system will then work harder to maintain the temperature, wearing the components down and increasing your bills.

If your unit is blowing stale air, mold, dust, or debris could be clogging the vents or your ductwork. A technician will clean the system and ensure healthy air is flowing through your home.

The system should run silently except for when it’s initially turned on, off, or when it’s cycling. However, if you hear unusual sounds, parts can be loose or worn out.

When Should You Replace It?

HVACEventually, repairs won’t be sufficient. If you’re calling your HVAC technician too often and the unit still isn’t functioning correctly, you should consider a replacement.

Take your finances into consideration, as well. If repairing the system will cost half or more of the unit’s value, you’re better off investing in a new one.

Air conditioners will last up to 15 years, heat pumps will run for approximately 16 years, and furnaces will function for close to 20 years. By the time you’re ready for a replacement, newer and more efficient models will be available on the market.

Armstrong Air® products are highly efficient, capable of cooling and heating your home, while also saving you money on your utility bills. For example, the government mandates a minimum Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) level of 78% for furnaces. The furnaces of Armstrong Air® have AFUE levels ranging between 83% and 97%.
