Whether you ride a bike for transportation, leisure, or exercise, you will work up a sweat, especially during warm weather. At the same time, spring and summer are ideal for riding, full of sun and clear skies. To take full advantage of the beautiful weather, you should know how to keep cool. Below are a few ways to stay comfortable throughout your ride.

How to Keep Cool When Biking in Warm Weather

1. Drink Water

Hydration is essential to maintaining healthy body temperature. You'll be sweating and losing fluids during a bike ride. Bring along a bottle of water, but instead of chugging it, take small sips frequently. If you're planning a long trip, map out the route, and identify a few stores or restaurants along the way—anyplace you can stop and pick up a bottle of water.

2. Dress Appropriately

bikeAdditionally, you should wear cycling clothes. These garments provide moisture-wicking, which means they pull water away from the skin through tiny capillaries in the fabric. Once these capillaries deposit the moisture on the exterior of the clothing, it evaporates quickly. The result is that sweat and heat don't weigh you down when you ride. Bike shorts and shirts, cycling socks, and track mitts have moisture-wicking in mind, so you should take advantage of them.

3. Ride at Optimal Times

The sun is at its peak at noon, but during the spring and summer, the light is intense anytime from late morning to late afternoon. Cycling during these hours will increase the chances of having a hot and uncomfortable ride. If possible, ride earlier in the morning or the late afternoon, as less sun will bring colder air. Be sure your bike has proper lights and wear reflective gear so others on the road can see you.
