Spring is the ideal time to check your cooling system. Harsh winter temperatures can cause mechanical problems, and no one wants to be stuck with a broken AC once the hot summer months start. Use this guide to make sure that every aspect of your cooling system is working correctly.

What to Do When Turning On the AC for the First Time This Season

1. Replace Old Filters

Filters are easy to overlook since they’re such a small part of your cooling system, but they have a significant impact on the efficiency of the AC unit. Filters are inexpensive to replace and easy to switch out. For top results, change your filters every few months. If you have pets, consider replacing them even sooner than that since pet hair can cause blockages.

2. Inspect the Insulation

If you look at the back of the AC unit, you’ll notice coolant lines that connect to your home. These lines should be surrounded by insulation. If the insulation is cracked, broken, or missing, have it repaired or replaced before you start using your cooling system. Contact an HVAC professional for help if you notice this issue.

3. Turn On the AC Unit

coolingOnce you’ve checked the items above, it’s time to turn on your AC. Set the thermostat to a cool temperature and ensure that cold air is coming out of the vents after a few minutes. If you notice that the air isn’t cooling off after 30 minutes, have the unit checked for any damage or leaks.

4. Plan for a Tuneup

Have a professional inspect your cooling system at least once a year. During the tuneup, the HVAC professional can check the items listed above and also perform a comprehensive inspection on the inside of the unit to ensure components are in working order. They can also make recommendations for improving the efficiency of your system.
