Since the panels are flat, they must be placed at the correct angle to absorb enough light and complete this process. Although they require more effort to install, flat panels are generally cheaper than solar vacuum tubes because of their simpler design.

Solar PanelsA solar vacuum tube is made of two layers of glass with a vacuum in between. UV rays heat up the water inside of the tube. Once the water is fully heated, it pushes through the top of the tube and into a circulation pump that transports the hot water to a storage tank in your home. From the storage tank, the water flows through the pipes to the faucets.

Solar vacuum tubes are more efficient than flat solar panels. The cylindrical shape allows for the light to reach a larger surface area. However, since the thin glass that surrounds the tubes is prone to breakage, they require more maintenance than flat panels.
