Dealing with a potentially broken air conditioner can be troubling, especially during summer, when you need the unit the most. Occasionally, however, you may be able to resolve the problem on your own. Before you schedule air conditioning repairs, try a few of these troubleshooting suggestions for common AC concerns.

How to Troubleshoot Your AC

1. It Doesn’t Cool Effectively

There are many reasons why an AC won’t cool your home properly. In some cases, it could be due to a part failure that requires air conditioning repairs. But in other cases, you might need to replace an old filter. Because the filter is responsible for collecting the dirt, dust, and general debris, it eventually becomes clogged. That forces the unit to work overtime to cool the house and may limit its capacity to do that effectively. Replace the filter at least every three months, or more routinely if you have pets.

2. It Doesn’t Work at All

Check the electrical panel for a switch that isn’t on. Ideally, it should have a label to help guide you. Flip it back on if it’s turned off, then try the unit again. If the breaker trips again as soon as you turn on the system, then stop as it could be an electrical issue.

3. It Produces Warm Air

You expect cool air to blow from your vents whenever you turn on the thermostat. But if all you feel is warmth, it could be that the outside unit is dirty. This is always a possibility, especially if you haven’t tended to your landscape in a few weeks. Clear the unit of any debris with a gentle stream of water from the hose. Also, remove any foliage that might be growing around the unit. Leave at least a couple of feet of space surrounding it so that contractors have enough room to perform air conditioning repairs and maintenance.
