Cavities are small holes or damaged parts of a tooth that are caused by decay. They are often treated easily with dental fillings, but they can sometimes get more serious over time if they’re not addressed quickly. To give yourself the best chance of catching cavities quickly, below are some signs to look out for.

How to Tell If You Have a Cavity

1. Pain or Sensitivity

When decay wears away at a tooth’s enamel, the dentin becomes exposed. This can make teeth more sensitive to hot or cold substances. If the decay continues, the nerve can even become exposed, which causes shooting or sharp pain. Getting a filling early on can help you stop the pain and keep it from getting worse.

2. Bad Breath

fillingsCavities are often caused by bacteria in plaque that has built up around the teeth, and this bacteria can produce an unpleasant smell or taste in the mouth. If you notice prolonged bouts of bad breath that aren’t caused by a recent meal, it may be time for a cleaning or checkup.

3. Visible Holes or Discoloration

Cavities can sometimes create visual spots on the enamel. You may see an indent in the tooth or notice a bit of discoloration. These spots can appear dark or white, and they tend to get larger over time. Whenever you notice a new blemish on a tooth, get it checked out before it grows and starts to become painful or irritated.
