Without proper preparation, heavy spring rains can cause basement flooding. To keep your home dry and prevent water damage in the coming months, practice the following tips as the weather warms.

How to Prevent Basement Flooding

1. Repair Foundation Cracks

Cracks in the foundation are notorious for letting water through. Visually inspect your basement walls and the exterior of your foundation for rifts, and fill any you find with epoxy for a water-tight seal. If leaks persist, schedule professional help.

2. Maintain the Sump Pump

A properly functioning sump pump will prevent your basement from flooding by collecting and flushing away excess water. To ensure it works when you need it most, test the function of your pump every six months by pouring water into the sump pit to trigger the mechanism. Additionally, make sure your sump pump has a backup power source in case your electricity fails during a flood.

3.  Clean Your Gutters

water damageClogged gutters collect rainwater that can drip down and pool near your home’s foundation, encouraging basement flooding and other forms of water damage. Keeping your gutters and downspout clean will ensure water is directed away from your house. Additionally, check that your downspout empties at least three feet away from the base of your home for effective drainage.

4. Install Window Well Covers

If your basement has below-grade windows, protect them from leakage with window well covers. These clear acrylic caps secure over the windows without blocking light to keep excess moisture from coming in.

5. Address Landscaping Issues

Improper lawn grading can encourage water to flow toward your home’s foundation rather than away from it. To prevent water damage, have a professional regrade your lawn or install a French drain.

6. Schedule a Sewer or Septic Inspection

Home sewer and septic systems can become overloaded with rainwater if they’re not maintained properly. To keep these systems functioning properly, schedule annual maintenance and call in professionals immediately if you have a clog.
