If you have pets, you should make air conditioning maintenance a priority. As much as they love them, they can fill the air with hair, dander, and whatever else they track in from outdoors, all of which have an effect on indoor air quality and the operation of your HVAC system. Here’s what you should know to prevent a loss of cooling efficiency during the hottest days of summer.

An Air Conditioning Maintenance Checklist for Pet Owners

1. Change the Filter

You should change HVAC filters often—about every three months—or more frequently if your filter tends to clog quickly. If you have pets, upgrading yours to one with a higher MERV rating will be more effective at trapping their hair, as well as dust, pollen, mold, and airborne particulates.

2. Protect Outdoor Compressor

air conditioning maintenanceAn air conditioning unit needs about three feet of open space around it to function at its best. If your plantings are creeping too close, trim them back in spring.

You should also have the inside of the compressor cleaned annually. You can do the work yourself or have a contractor perform this service. Never remove the grill to vacuum out leaves or spray condenser fins clean with water without first shutting off the electricity.

While freeing the compressor of debris, look for signs of corrosion. Dog urine, which erodes aluminum and copper, may damage compressor parts and cause leaks. Try fencing your unit off or protecting it from pets with a cover that doesn’t impede airflow.

3. Get Annual Inspections

Preventative air conditioning maintenance will help keep your cooling system operating at peak efficiency. During an annual inspection, a contractor will reseal any leaky ducts to prevent pet hair and dander from recirculating throughout your home. Speak directly with your contractor about any concerns. They’ll have recommendations for lessening the impact of pets on your system. They may, for example, suggest having your ducts cleaned to improve airflow, air quality, and system efficiency.
