Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and support gum tissue. Dentists provide both full and partial options, and the one that works best depends on the patient’s needs. Here’s more information about how each of these devices restores your confidence and smile.

How Do Full Dentures Work?

Also called complete dentures, these can be made as needed or in advance, in which case they’re referred to as immediate dentures. They replace all natural teeth, and can be fitted to the top and/or bottom gums.

dentistA lab creates these based on a mold of the patient’s mouth. After the dentist takes the imprint of your gums, the lab needs around eight to 12 weeks to create the unit. If you want artificial teeth without this waiting period, immediate dentures can be made before the teeth extractions.

How Do Partial Dentures Work?

Also known as partials, these are used when some natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. They consist of removable pieces that are mounted on a gum-colored base, which fits into the gap between natural teeth. They’re attached to a bridge, or a base that adheres to the crowns of the surrounding teeth.

This option is reserved for those who have natural teeth that are not affected by decay. Partial dentures allow patients to save these teeth, while restoring the original appearance and functionality of their bite.
