Saddles are a type of horse tack, or equipment, which act as seats for the rider. There are several types of saddles that have unique features to support specific types of riding. Whether you’re new to horseback riding or an experienced rider looking to expand your practice, here’s a list of some popular saddle types to help you determine the best option for your needs.

Common Styles of Horse Saddles

1. General Purpose Saddle

The general purpose saddle is for new or intermediate riders who want to experiment with different types of riding. From small, basic jumps to dressage (a series of movements performed in competitions), this sturdy, comfortable saddle accommodates a broad range of entry-level practices.

2. Ranch Saddle

A component of horse tack used for long blocks of cattle work, ranch saddles are heavyweight and designed for comfort. They feature a deep seat, horn wrap, and prioritize functionality for hours spent on horseback.

3. Trail Saddle

They’re lightweight and padded according to the rider’s unique preference. Various horns, skirts, and swells are available for further customization.

4. Jumping Saddle

As their name suggests, the jumping saddle supports jumping through a unique, flat seat style, and propels the rider forward for stability during jumps. Additionally, the saddle features larger flaps for additional leg support and protection.

5. Endurance Saddle

For avid riders who compete in multi-day competitions that cover dozens of miles of rough terrain, comfort is paramount. Endurance saddles are lightweight yet sturdy, and have extra padding to keep the rider as comfortable as possible. They also feature rigging dees and saddle strings to which saddlebags can be fixed.

6. Roping Saddle

Cattle roping is a popular rodeo sport. To perform challenging roping moves without slipping off their horse, riders need a sturdy base to hold on to. For this reason, roping saddles have strong horns and a heavy base. They are quite heavy compared to other styles of horse tack, but are generally used for shorter durations.

7. Youth Saddle

To accommodate young riders, youth saddles are lightweight and small. They’re commonly used on ponies and may come with a handle to promote balance when children are learning to ride. Typically, youth saddles are made from synthetic materials, such as nylon, and are thus more affordable than adult styles.
