Getting a flat tire can be a frustrating experience. Many drivers are unsure of what to do if they are stopped on the side of the road and unable to make it to an auto repair center. Many newer car models do not come with spare tires, and that might make the situation tricker. Below are some options you can implement if you do not have a spare tire.

What to Do Without a Spare Tire

1. Use Run-Flat Systems

You can continue driving on run-flat tires after you experience a flat tire. If you are driving on run-flats and puncture a tire, you can count on them to get you to an auto repair center to have the tire replaced. There are two main types of run-flats, a self-supporting system, and the support ring system. A self-supporting model has a reinforced sidewall feature that will continue to support the vehicle even if the tire is losing air. In a support ring system, a strong rubber ring supports the vehicle’s weight. They are not permanent solutions but can take on punctures and bear with low air pressure for about 50 miles. You do not have to feel unsafe, parked haphazardly on the side of the road, stranded until someone comes with a spare tire. Instead, you can drive on the run-flat to a safe destination where you can call for help or have your tire replaced.

2. Stow an Emergency Repair Kit in Your Car

If you know you are driving without a spare, purchase a portable emergency tire repair kit. You can patch a hole on your tire to stop it from leaking, spray it with sealer for extra precaution, and inflate the tire back up to normal levels with an air compressor. You can look for a full kit or buy separate items and make your own repair kit. Keep in mind that your repair is not a permanent fix. It will keep you driving so that you can make your way to an auto repair center. Also, remember that this makeshift kit is for minor punctures and problems only.

3. Call for Roadside Assistance

If you lack a spare or the know-how to repair your own tire, make sure to have a roadside assistance membership. You will pay a monthly or yearly subscription to ensure you will have help if you need it, but this preventative action is essential for you and your vehicle’s safety. Make sure you are safely pulled over, shut off your engine, and put out traffic cones to alert oncoming traffic. You should remain in your vehicle as you wait for the tow truck to arrive.
