Many people find generators helpful during emergencies. If the building you’re in experiences a power outage, a generator can provide you with electricity until the issue that caused the outage is fixed. To ensure that your generator is fully prepared for these kinds of scenarios, here are some steps you can take to maintain its efficiency.

How to Take Care of a Generator

1. Cover it Up

Since generators are located outside, this leaves them vulnerable to the elements. Electricity and rainfall, for example, are not a good mix. Not only could natural weather patterns cause expensive damages, but it could also rust the generator and cause it to deteriorate faster.

A simple piece of tarp can prevent these issues. Enclosures that are specifically made for generators can also be purchased for extra protection.

2. Power Up Every Three Months  generators

To ensure that the generator will be ready when it’s needed, keep the battery charged. You can do this by regularly turning the generator on, even when it’s not necessary. It’s recommended you turn it on every three months for 30 minutes to keep the battery from burning out.

3. Stock Up on Oil

Generators require oil to lubricate all of the moving parts they have. If it’s not oiled up enough, the components could struggle to move and generate electricity. It’s important to make sure your generator always has plenty of oil so it’ll be prepared for any future outages.

Even if your generator seems to be working fine, don’t necessarily take that as a sign that it has enough oil. The parts could still be experiencing friction and contributing to the long-term deterioration of the generator. Make sure to refuel your machine with oil frequently.
