When you have a clog in your sewer, a plumber’s snake can usually solve the problem. For more severe clogs, further action may be necessary. Hydrojet cleaning is similar to a pressure wash for your sewer pipes and can typically handle any clog in your system. Below is a beginner’s guide to everything you should know about this service.

How Does It Work?

This process involves sending an ultra high-pressure stream of water into your pipes. Typically, the water pressure is about 4,000 PSI, which is about twice the amount of a typical gas-powered pressure washer.

The jet is placed into an opening in the sewer line and sends a steady stream of water through the pipes, clearing any blockages in its path. Depending on what’s causing the blockage, a different type of jet may be used. For example, if your sewer line is obstructed by tree roots, a more powerful jet is necessary to blast through and clear the line.

Hydro jets can clear pipes up to 18 inches wide and 700 feet long. Some experts recommend scheduling hydrojet cleaning annually to prevent clogs, especially if you have older pipes.

Why Is It Necessary?

hydrojet cleaningPeople typically need this service if there’s a clog that doesn't clear with a plumber’s snake. Using high pressure can easily cut through almost any debris, allowing the drain to flow freely.

However, clogs can also be caused when tree roots infiltrate the sewer line. Although most newer sewer lines are constructed from PVC or cast iron, which withstand tree roots fairly well, older sewer lines (those built in the 1970s or earlier) are often made from clay. These clay pipes are more susceptible to tree root obstruction.
