Fire extinguishers can be life-saving tools in a workplace, which is why employees should know how to use them. However, not all blazes can be controlled by staff members. Use the following guide to inform your team about the steps to take in an emergency situation.

How to React in Case of a Fire

1. Decide What to Do

Immediately upon discovery, pull the nearest fire alarm to alert all coworkers. If the fire is shorter than you, employ the extinguisher following the steps below to eliminate it.

Otherwise, only use the device to clear a path to the exit. Follow the escape route planned during drills.

2. Identify the Type of Fire

Fires fall into A, B, C, D, and K classes, which require different fire extinguishers. Type A fires start from wood, plastics, and paper, and require water-type extinguishers. CO2 extinguishers help with flammable liquid fires, while dry-chemical varieties eliminate electrical fires.

You can tell which type of extinguisher you have by checking the label. Multi-purpose devices work on all types of blazes.

3. Use the P.A.S.S. Technique

Fire extinguishersFollow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s P.A.S.S. (Point, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) technique to use an extinguisher. Pull the pin at the top to break the seal. Next, aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Carefully squeeze the handle to deploy the agent and sweep it across the base of the flames to extinguish them.

If the fire doesn’t subside, don’t run to another extinguisher. They aren’t always enough to put out blazes, so exit the building for your safety.
