Packing fragile items for storage requires careful preparation. Properly securing and wrapping cups, plates, and silverware ensures items don’t shift in the moving truck, preserving their integrity. Follow this guide to safeguard your belongings.

How to Pack Cutlery & Silverware

Separate silverware by type, including forks and spoons, and bind groups of 10 or so with rubber bands. Wrap these in one or more dishtowels to prevent rattling.

When packing knives, first cover the sharp edges with tape. Roll two or three up in a hand towel, making sure the blades face the same direction. Once they're surrounded by fabric, add another pair of knives and continue rolling. You should be able to fit six to eight knives per towel. Pack larger cooking knives following the same steps.

Place all cutlery in a box, packing tightly so they have no room to move. If needed, use towels to fill the gaps and prevent shifting.

How to Pack Dishes

Storage facility in Rochester, NYLine a box with bubble wrap or crushed packing paper. Avoid large boxes, which may become too heavy to carry.

Wrap each plate or bowl in paper or bubble wrap and stack gently. When the box is full, stuff more packing supplies into the corners and spaces between plates to prevent shifting. Secure the box with shipping tape.

How to Pack Glassware

Purchase a specialty glassware box with cardboard dividers to keep glasses and mugs separate.

Wrap each cup in paper or bubble wrap and slide it into its niche. Cover the packed glasses with another layer of paper or bubble wrap before replacing the lid. Tape the lid shut to prevent accidental spillage.
