The emergence of the coronavirus has significantly changed daily routines. To help prevent spreading the contagious infection, federal, state and local authorities have mandated temporarily closing schools and businesses. Stay-at-home orders have also been imposed for both adults and children. If you’re among the many that are stuck in the house, doctors advise the following to remain healthy and active.

How to Support Your Health From Home

1. Maintain Good Eating Habits

It’s tempting to snack on chips, cookies, and other not-so-healthy foods if you’re confined indoors. Overindulging can zap you of energy and weaken your immune system, which minimizes protective antibodies to fight infections. Commit to eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Skip the processed meat and cut back on sweets and alcohol.

2. Remain Physically Active

doctorWhile most gyms are closed during the coronavirus outbreak, you can still exercise. Turn on some music and dance to get the heart pumping. If you don’t have hand weights, grab two canned goods for arm curls. Walk or jog in place while watching TV. Enlist the whole family for more fun.

3. Stay Connected

Social distancing is the new normal to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It doesn’t mean you have to be completely isolated. Doctors encourage individuals to use video sharing programs, phone calls, and texting to stay connected to loved ones. Nurturing your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Stress, after all, has a negative effect on the immune system. Talking to loved ones regularly may help curb anxiety.
