While your air conditioner has been dormant through the winter, it’s going to be relied on heavily during the summer. To ensure the comfort of your family during this hot season, investing in early AC repairs will prevent any breakdowns from occurring.

When Are Signs Your Air Conditioner Should Be Repaired?

1. Reduced Airflow

If the airflow isn’t as strong as it should be, rooms or areas of the house will be cooled unevenly. Put a hand to your air conditioner’s vent. If the airflow is low or if it’s blowing hot air, your compressor could be failing, or your unit doesn’t have enough freon.

If it’s still blowing cool air, but the airflow isn’t strong, your ductwork might need some maintenance. With time and use, tears in the duct can form, causing cool air to escape. A simple resealing will fix the issue.

A blockage could also be to blame. Debris will clog up the vents over time, restricting airflow. Having the vents and ducts routinely cleaned will ensure your comfort over the summer.

2. Thermostat Problems

When your thermostat isn’t functioning correctly, some rooms will be downright frigid while others remain hot and humid. In other cases, the thermostat will report one temperature but will be off by at least 10 degrees.

3. Water Leakage

If you notice water pooling around your system, reach out to an HVAC technician for AC repairs. Your air conditioner uses refrigerant to cool your home. In return, it produces condensation, which is expelled from the system. The water could be a sign that the refrigerant is leaking, which is a health risk.

It could also be a sign that the drain tube is broken, which can cause mold to grow and rust to form on the unit. Mold growth is also a health risk. If you have mold in your ductwork, your system will send stale air into your home.

4. Strange Noises

Your unit should only make noise when it’s starting, stopping, or cycling. When it makes a rattling sound, it usually means a part needs to be tightened. A squealing sound means the belt is out of place. Grating and grinding noises are signs of a serious problem with the motor.

5. Frequent Cycling

Your AC will cycle more often during the hottest points of summer. However, if it’s becoming too frequent, reach out to an HVAC contractor. The cycling could require repairing or replacing the unit.
