Fire alarms play a critical role in home and business safety. However, they may make noise from time to time that's not due to a fire. These devices are often sensitive to changes in the environment, which means they can give false alerts. If your fire alarms are frequently triggered, determine how best to handle the situation by reviewing some potential causes below.

What Can Trigger a Fire Alarm?

1. Dirt & Dust Buildup

Though the outside of a fire alarm may appear clean, the inside can accumulate quite a bit of dirt and dust over time. The sensors can then mistake this buildup for smoke because dirt and dust particles reflect light the same way smoke particles do. To keep the alarm from sounding, remove the cover periodically and clean out the device.

2. Smoke Particles

Usually, this can be prevented if you make sure your fireplace is well ventilated, the stove vent or fans are on while you're cooking, and the doors and windows are shut when lighting a bonfire. If the false alarms continue, you may need to change the placement of your smoke detectors.

3. Insects

Many insects prefer dark spaces and will crawl into a fire alarm to hide. If you have an infestation you need to get rid of, contact a pest control professional for help. Spraying insecticides that contain harsh chemicals can damage the electronics in the device, and may also cause a false alert, so avoid these if possible.

4. Low Batteries

Sometimes, a fire alarm can go off if the batteries have started to die or the connection has loosened. It’s typically recommended that you change the batteries once or twice a year. If you’ve done this and your device still giving a signal, it may be time for a new one. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, you should replace your alarms every 10 years.
