Depending on where you’re from, the sub sandwich has many different names, such as Italians or hoagies. However, each variation is made up of a long roll of bread, deli meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a wide range of condiments. With a history dating back to the 19th century, this special sandwich is one of America’s most popular and convenient meals. Here is a brief history of how the sub came to be.

The History of the Sub Sandwich

The 19th Century

In 1899 Portland, Maine, the “Italian” was invented by Italian-American restaurant owner, Giovanni Amato. This sandwich made it easy for construction workers to eat on-the-go and was relatively inexpensive. While there are different variations and recipes, the original “Italian” was made on a soft roll with ham, American cheese, onions, pickles, tomatoes, salt, pepper, and oil.

Early 20th Century

Sub SandwichesIn 20th century Philadelphia, Italian immigrants building American ships also ate sub sandwiches but called them by a different name. They were named hoagies because Hog Island was the place where these ships were built. Although hoagie was the main name for the sandwich, it had many names, including hoogie and hoggy that were used until the 1950s.

Present Day

The sub sandwich is now known all over the United States and is also sold at many restaurants. Although it has different names all over the country, the name, “sub,” which refers to its uncanny resemblance to a submarine, can be used as an easy marketing tool for restaurants. With a wide variety of topping and bread choices, this sandwich is easily customizable.

Just like in the past, the sub is best-eaten on-the-go. This is why it remains one of the most popular lunch options in America.
