It’s easy to forget about your gutters when they do their job properly because they’ll simply funnel water off your roof and away from your home without issue. However, deteriorating gutter systems will cause a lot of problems around your home. Know the early warning signs that it’s time to call your roofing company to replace them, and you can avoid thousands of dollars in water damage.

When to Replace Your Gutters

1. Standing Water

guttersWhen your downspouts do their job properly, water should funnel away from the base of the house rather than pooling around it. Any stagnant water around the foundation or under the downspouts could damage the foundation, destroy your landscaping, and encourage a pest infestation such as mosquitos.

2. Wet or Dirty Siding

When your gutters overflow, they allow water to run down your siding. This much moisture on the siding will damage it over time, since the material isn’t designed to handle that type of exposure. Before the more serious damage occurs, such as rotting and cracking, you may see the signs of overflow on the siding. You’ll see splashes of dried dirt showing where the water flowed down.

3. Sagging

Damaged gutters will keep water stagnant inside as the rain continues to pool. Though you may not be able to see the water itself unless you get up on a ladder, you can see the resulting damage from the extra weight. The gutters will start to sag or bend, and the hangers that attach them to the roof may start to loosen.
