For many people, vision problems can be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses. Some people even have eye surgery to repair their vision and reduce or eliminate their need for corrective lenses. However, in some cases, vision loss progresses beyond the point where simple solutions are available. For these patients in need of more involved treatment, a corneal transplant may be the answer.

What Is a Corneal Transplant?

Corneal transplant eye surgery involves removing damaged or diseased corneal tissue from one or both eyes and replacing it with healthy donor tissue. To perform the procedure, the surgeon sedates the patient and numbs the eye to prevent pain and movement.

Using a precise surgical tool, the diseased corneal layers are removed, and the donor tissue is sewn in. In some cases, if donor tissue is unavailable, the surgeon may implant artificial corneal tissue.

Why Might Someone Need a Corneal Transplant?

Severe Eye Infections & Inflammation

eye surgeryIn extreme cases, an eye infection or inflammation can lead to scarring on the cornea that disrupts vision. Severe eye infections stem from several causes that range from weakened immune systems to improper contact lenses care. Even just rubbing your eyes without washing your hands can cause an infection that leads to vision loss.

Thinning of the Cornea

Some people have medical conditions that cause the cornea to thin, ultimately affecting their vision. One such condition is called keratoconus, which actually changes the shape of the cornea and causes blurred vision and extreme glare.

Fuch’s Dystrophy

With this condition, the endothelial (outer) layer of the cornea thins and wears away, causing hazy and blurred vision. Swelling and pain are also common signs. Eye surgery is typically the best way to treat this disease, as it replaces the endothelial tissue layer.
