Most police officers rarely draw their guns, but when they do, it's imperative that their weapons work. Since law enforcement agencies choose firearms based on reliability and effectiveness, many people like to purchase similar models. Here are a few many organizations use.

What Types of Guns Are Used for Law Enforcement?

1. Glock® 22

The guns in this line are polymer-framed, semi-automatic weapons originally developed for the Austrian army and police. They went into service in 1982, and initially received criticism because of their plastic frames. However, they became popular for being lightweight and durable. The Glock 22 carries 15 .40-caliber rounds, but weighs just 32 ounces.

2. Sig Sauer® P226

Guns in Anchorage, AKSIG Sauer is a German partnership formed in 1976 between Swiss company Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG) and German J.P. Sauer & Sohn. Their P226 pistol can be chambered for four different types of ammunition. It has been used by U.S. Navy Seals and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and is favored by the Michigan State Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and many other law enforcement bodies. It holds 15 rounds and has an ambidextrous catch that makes it a favorite among left-handed officers.

3. HK45

Heckler & Koch®, a German arms manufacturer founded in 1949, designed the HK45 for the U.S. military. This semi-automatic handgun has a durable, accurate, and powerful .45 caliber. It features an ergonomic grip and effective recoil dampening. It’s also customizable, and agencies can outfit them with laser sights as needed.
