Scrap metal recycling is a fantastic way to unload metal you may have in your home or business, as well as conserve resources to protect the environment. Before bringing your supply to the salvage yard, you should know a few rules, so you do it correctly. Below are several do’s and don’ts about this process.

Do:

Separate everything.

Make separate containers for each type of scrap before heading to the salvage yard. This helps you receive accurate compensation for your scrap metal recycling since the experts can determine what you have. Bringing in a mixed container can cause you to receive compensation for the least valuable metal in your load. Some yards may not accept it if you don’t organize the metal.

Strip & clean.

You should strip thick copper or aluminum wiring, so they are thinner than a regular pencil. Cut off soldered copper ends, and remove additional elements from the surface like nails, nuts, bolts, and anything that is a different material. If there are a few different metals on one piece, separate them to get the most out of your scrap.

Keep it safe.

Don’t:

Break the law.

Know what your area’s laws are regarding scrap metal recycling, and follow them carefully. This also extends to taking scrap from other people’s property, even if they discard it as trash.  There are fines for taking metal that is not yours, despite it being garbage. You may also face a charge for theft.

Overload.

Overpacking your vehicle is dangerous. Metal pieces can damage the interior of your ride, leaving scrapes, dents, and scratches. Break your haul into smaller amounts and take multiple trips. Always wear safety gloves when packing to protect your skin.

Unload randomly.

Carefully research scrap metal yards and buyers, so you know you get the best rates for what you have. Compare different yards and their payouts to see if it is worth driving further. Also, find out if they include any additional services like pickups for your convenience.
