Refrigerators are one of the essential appliances in most homes. While most units can last for several years, like any appliance, they do occasionally need maintenance or repairs. A common issue is leakage. Here are four common reasons for refrigerator leaks and what to do about them.

4 Causes of Refrigerator Leaks

1. Check the Defrost Drain

The defrost drain is typically located at the back of the freezer. It can become blocked by items such as boxes of food or ice buildup, causing the unit to work harder than usual to maintain a suitable temperature. This can result in condensation accumulating on the coils, and, eventually, water can leak out. Check the drain to see if it is blocked and, if so, reorganize items and brush away ice to clear it.

2. Damaged Drain Pan

refrigeratorsAnother potential culprit may be the drain pan, which is located underneath the refrigerator. This pan is designed to collect water to prevent it from pooling inside the appliance. If it is cracked or otherwise damaged, it may leak onto the floor.

3. Tilted Refrigerator

Leaks can also be a result of misalignment. Refrigerators are meant to be tilted slightly backward with the front about a quarter to half-inch taller than the back to allow coolant to flow efficiently. If the unit is not tilted this way, coolant may pool in the pipes, causing the appliance to work harder and produce more condensation in the process.

Place a level on the floor to see if the refrigerator is balanced appropriately. If not, you can remove the grill and adjust the legs and rollers. An appliance repair technician can also do this for you if you are not comfortable fixing it yourself.

4. Faulty Water Supply Line

Refrigerators with ice makers or water dispensers have a water supply line. A damaged water supply line is one of the most common causes of a leaky refrigerator. When the line is malfunctioning, you may also notice slow water flow or ice production. If the line is plastic, it may become brittle and crack over time.

Copper lines, however, can also kink and fail, particularly if the appliance is jarred. Have an appliance repair professional examine the line to determine if a repair or replacement is a wiser choice.
