With the arrival of warmer weather, it’s time to take your boat out of storage for some open water fun. However, just as you had to prep the boat to be put away, you’ll now need to take a few steps to ensure that it’s safe and fully operational before using it. Here’s a checklist to help you get started.

How to Get Your Boat Ready for Summer

1. Test the Battery

After hauling your boat out of storage, inspect the battery for damage. Check for bulges, cracks, broken terminals, and ruptures in the case. If these issues are present, you may need to replace your battery.

Test the charge of the battery using a voltmeter—a device that can be purchased at most hardware stores—or have it inspected by a professional. Keep in mind that a lead-acid battery will lose some of its charge when not in use. As such, it’s best to charge these batteries about once a month to keep them at full capacity and ready for use.

2. Replace Fluids

storageStoring your boat during cold winter months may thicken the motor oil, which can lead to engine malfunction. Before you use the vessel, replace the oil and filter to prevent problems. The antifreeze in your cooling system can also be negatively affected by the cold temperatures, so drain and replenish it, too.

3. Inspect the Engine & Propellers

Make sure that all parts, especially the engine and the propellers, are intact. If you suspect an engine leak, call professionals to fix the issue. Look out for damage in the exhaust system as well, as these can discharge odorless, toxic carbon monoxide gas, which poses health risks such as respiratory problems and can even cause you to lose consciousness.

Cracks, bends, and dents in the propellers can cause excessive vibration in the boat that can damage other parts, so check for these problems as well.
