Pregnancy and childbirth are two huge milestones in life. It’s important that as a mother-to-be, you know the various steps you can take to protect your health as your immune system goes through changes. Use this guide to learn what you should expect and how to stay healthy, and discuss any concerns with your OB-GYN.

How does pregnancy affect the immune system?

At the beginning of a pregnancy, the woman’s immune system is repressed to allow fetal cell and antigen growth. By the end of pregnancy, the immune system increases to produce the inflammation necessary to stimulate and support labor.

Hormone levels change dramatically during pregnancy, affecting other organ functions. The increase of progesterone relaxes the ureter and bladder muscles, so urine remains in the bladder too long and urinary tract infections may occur more often.

The increase of estrogen stimulates the production of fluid in the lungs, making them more susceptible to bacterial growth and pulmonary conditions like pneumonia.

Fortunately, most infections common to pregnant women are not transmittable to the baby. Ask your OB-GYN if you have questions about a specific condition or illness.

What are the best ways to stay healthy?

ob-gynYour physician will test you for Group B Strep at the end of your pregnancy and prescribe antibiotics to prevent sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis if you test positive.

Stay up to date on vaccinations, and get treated for STIs before delivery. Tell your doctor immediately about any unusual symptoms you experience.

Include a variety of healthy foods in your diet, especially protein and vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables. Cook meats thoroughly and avoid any unpasteurized or raw dairy products.

Wash your hands often, and don’t share utensils or personal hygiene supplies.  For you and your child’s overall benefit, practice safe sex and take prenatal pills recommended by your OB-GYN.
