Whether you’re trying to advertise the opening of your business, spreading the word about a big sale, or just trying to attract customers, a retail banner can help. Cheaper than other forms of advertising, banners can make your business pop. However, to make the most of this marketing technique, follow these guidelines when crafting your design.

How to Design an Effective Banner

1. Limit Information

A banner that’s too wordy and informational won’t get read, no matter how carefully you edit the text. With that in mind, aim to condense your message as much as possible.

If it’s advertising your business opening, “Grand Opening,” your business name, and the date may be enough. Similarly, if you’re promoting a sale or a new product or service, condense the description so that a glance gets the message across.

2. Mind the Font

bannerYour advertisement won’t be effective if it isn’t legible. Before you choose a font size, consider who you want to see the promotion. If you wish to attract pedestrians on the sidewalk, it doesn’t need to be massive. However, if your business is near a roadway and you’re trying to get drivers to notice, you’ll need to choose a large font size and limit the number of words so the message can be skimmed.

3. Choose Colors Carefully

Using an adequate font size won’t help much if the background makes it hard to read your message. For example, using white lettering on a light background could make reading your advertisement in the sunlight nearly impossible.

As you’re choosing the colors, consider basing the shades on your business branding to create a subconscious association. Even if it doesn’t draw a certain passerby, they’ll be more likely to think of your services the next time they see your brand in an ad.
