Over time, your air conditioner, heat pump, and furnace will experience wear and tear. With bi-annual servicing, your HVAC contractor will keep your equipment functioning for a decade or more. However, as time goes on, you’ll have to choose between repairing or replacing your system. Knowing what to invest in will save you money and keep your home comfortable.

When Should You Repair Your HVAC System?

A drop in efficiency means that your unit may not be heating or cooling appropriately. It could also increase your utility bills. A common cause of this problem is a faulty thermostat that HVAC contractors can easily replace.

There are normal sounds your system makes, like when you start it up or when it cycles. However, more abnormal sounds—like rattling, groaning, and whistling—are usually signs that there are loose parts that need to be tightened.

If your home isn’t heating or cooling each room evenly, there could be a tear in the ductwork that needs to be sealed.

In other instances, you’ll notice strange odors emanating from the unit. A mildew smell can indicate that the ducts need to be cleaned. If you detect a burning smell, turn the unit off immediately. The system’s wiring is likely damaged. To avoid an electrical shock or fire, reach out to an HVAC contractor for repairs.

When Should It Be Replaced?

HVAC ContractorOften, the decision to replace an HVAC unit comes down to comfort and savings. If your home still isn’t comfortable despite repairs, the unit might be too old and inefficient. When units are inefficient, they’ll work harder to make your home comfortable. The added stress will affect both the motor and your utility bills.

Sometimes the cost of a new unit will be a greater investment. If you’re continually in need of repairs or the cost of repairs is reaching half of the system’s value, it’ll be more cost-effective to replace the HVAC.

By the time your unit needs to be replaced, newer and more efficient models will be available. For instance, Armstrong Air® uses Energy Star® qualifications on their products to ensure both comfort and energy efficiency. By looking for furnaces with at least a 78% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating, a 9.50 Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF), and a 15 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) for air conditioners, your home will be comfortable all year long, and you’ll enjoy noticeable savings on your utility bills.
