How to Prevent Hearing Loss, Groton, Connecticut

As many as 48 million Americans suffer from some form of hearing damage. Whether caused by old age, repetitive loud noises, or an incident, hearing loss may affect your quality of life and make the tasks of daily living more challenging. Below, you’ll find a helpful guide on how to prevent hearing problems.

4 Ways to Protect Your Hearing

1. Stay Away From Loud Noises

Certain sounds that exceed 85 decibels have the potential to cause hearing damage and deafness. For example, the sounds of traffic, airplanes taking off, jackhammers or chainsaws, and music at full volume are usually at least 90 decibels. Avoid prolonged exposure to any repetitive loud sounds.

2. Use Caution When Using Earbuds

hearing lossWhen you wear earbuds or headphones, the speakers sit very close to your eardrums, which puts them at risk of damaging your hearing. This can lead to noise-induced hearing loss. Never turn the volume up to more than 60 percent of its maximum capacity or listen for more than an hour. Prevent the need to raise the volume by using earbuds or headphones with noise-canceling capabilities.

3. Wear Ear Protection

If you’re planning to mow your lawn, go to a sporting event, concert, shooting range, or you work in the construction business, wear musician’s earplugs or safety headphones. If you can’t wear ear protection, take breaks from the noise by stepping outside every 15 to 30 minutes. Although this is not as helpful as ear protection, this will give your ears some time to recover.

4. Schedule Hearing Tests

One of the best ways to monitor your hearing is by scheduling tests with an audiologist about once per year. They’ll check your hearing and identify the first signs of hearing problems, allowing you to take precautions or start treatment to prevent it from worsening.
