While you likely use your garage daily, you probably don't think about garage door maintenance very often. However, to keep your door in the best possible shape for longer, you should clean it often. For the best results, follow these steps.

How to Clean Your Garage Door

1. Wash With Mild Soap

When cleaning your garage door, you can use the same liquid soap you'd use on your dishes. You can also use liquid car wash. Some liquid car washes have wax already mixed into the wash. Don't use any strong detergents, as they can damage the door's paint or finish. Don't use bleach, just yet. Mix your soap and water accordingly. Using a clean, soft cloth or sponge, scrub the front and back of the door(s) thoroughly.

2. Use Bleach if Necessary

3. Rinse With Water

When you’re all done washing the surfaces, gently rinse the door with a hose. Be careful, since too much force can damage the finish. After it's thoroughly cleaned and rinsed, wait for the surface to dry completely.

4. Finish With Wax

Waxing is a vital part of garage door maintenance, as it'll protect the door long-term and repel dirt from its surface. First, make sure the entire area is clean and dry. Wax will apply best when doors are clean and dry. Then, cover the whole door with liquid wax, including the inside and bottom portions, as they can be exposed to the same dirt as the outside surface.
