When you’re ready to ditch glasses and enjoy excellent, unobstructed vision, get LASIK eye surgery. During this quick procedure, your ophthalmologist will map your corneas and reshape it using a special laser. Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for this state-of-the-art operation. Here are three signs you may be eligible for it.

How to Know If LASIK May Be Right for You

1. You’re Healthy

Although it involves lasers instead of scalpels, LASIK is still a surgical procedure, and you need to be in good condition before the procedure. Certain health conditions, including AIDS, Type 1 diabetes, Sjogren's syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis, can complicate recovery.

glassesYour eyes should also be healthy and free of diseases, such as severe dry eye syndrome. If you’ve recently had an eye infection or injury, you may need to wait until your eyes have fully recovered to the surgery.

2. Your Corneas Are Thick

Since LASIK involves reshaping your corneas, you may not be an eligible candidate for the procedure if they aren’t thick enough. While advances in LASIK have paved the way for many more people to undergo the surgery, other procedures, such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or implantable lenses, may be more appropriate for your situation.

3. Your Prescription Falls Within the Limits

To be eligible for LASIK, your glasses prescription needs to fall within a certain range. LASIK candidates must have a prescription between -11.00 diopters of nearsightedness or up to +5.00 diopters of farsightedness. You can find this information by looking at your glasses prescription or asking an optometrist.
